Air

Cairns and Great Barrier Reef region welcomes 2.25 million visitors each year. As Australia's northern gateway, Cairns Airport is serviced by six international airlines with over 7,500 seats each week and six domestic airlines with more than 31,000 seats.

International

The primary airlines servicing Cairns are Qantas Group via Jetstar brand, Cathay Pacific, air Niugini, Air New Zealand and Continental Airlines, with direct flights to Cairns originating from:

  • Japan - with connections to Asia, Europre and America
  • Singapore - with connections to Asia, Europe and America
  • Hong Kong - with connections to Asia, Europe and America
  • New Zealand - with connections to America
  • Guam - with connections to Japan and America
  • Papua New Guinea - with connections to Asia

Domestic

Domestically, Cairns is serviced by all the major Australian carriers including Virgin Blue and the Qantas Group brands of Qantas and Jetstar operating services to Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Darwin, with onward connecting fligts to other destinations.

Qantas and Qantaslink also serve a number of the major destinations directly from Cairns including one of the icons of Australia - Ayers Rock.

Skytrans operates services to regional areas within Queensland and there are a large number of local charter companies providing fast, regular service both to remote regional areas and to the Great Barrier Reef.

Rail

Both a scenic way to travel and a popular social alternative, rail travel to Cairns is a real option.

See the Queensland coast unfold while journeying on the Traveltrain's Sunlander. This service departs north from Brisbane to Cairns on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday and south from Cairns to Brisbane on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The Tilt Train is also a popular way to journey to Cairns and has two return services weekly between Brisbane and Cairns; departing Brisbane on Monday and Friday and Cairns on Sunday and Wednesday.

Road

A variety of coach services are available connecting you throughout the region and other destinations within Australia.

Sea

Cairns' seaport is the closest port to the Great Barrier Reef and is located on Trinity Inlet. It is a multi-purpose regional port which caters for a diverse range of industries including agriculture, mining and tourism.

Cairns Marina is a safe and modern floating marina with 214 berths surrounded by the Marlin Wharf and Sailfish Quay which doubles as a wave barrier. the Marina berths can accommodate a variety of vessels up to 80 metres in length.

Cairns is the country’s busiest cruise port and Queensland’s busiest commercial port with around 26 scheduled services each day to the Great Barrier Reef and islands off Cairns. It is a picturesque port, with passenger terminals and marina facilities located virtually in the central business district.
