The United States market has become the second largest for Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region with strong double digit growth in 2015-16 as a favourable exchange rate entices visitors to the only destination with two World Heritage areas side by side.
Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) Director of Business and Tourism Events Rosie Douglas said US visitors increased by 18 per cent to 109,000 and the destination was experiencing strong interest from US incentive groups.
“The Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest are incredible backdrops for incentive programs where exclusive experiences like gala dinners in the rainforest or on a sand cay, private walks with Aboriginal elders or swimming with Nemo and Dory can be tailor made,” she said.
“It has been 20 years since the award-winning Cairns Convention Centre opened and Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef was formed.
“In those two decades we have seen incentives and business events become increasingly sophisticated and we have worked as a team with organisers to ensure their events are extraordinary and memorable.
“Increased aviation capacity has made access to Cairns & Great Barrier Reef seamless, while major infrastructure upgrades and new developments are being rolled out for the destination.
“Investment includes the newly completed $40 million Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas makeover, $50 million Lizard Island rebuild, the refurbishment of the Shangri-La Hotel, The Marina, Cairns, the Tradewinds Esplanade and the Pullman International, and construction is underway on inner-city luxury apartments Nova City and the $50 million Cairns Aquarium.”
Cairns & Great Barrier Reef has five unique coastal precincts, each with its own character, combined with offshore islands surrounded by coral reefs. These tropical destinations are:

- Palm Cove – an intimate beach destination overlooking the Coral Sea
- Port Douglas – a sophisticated village on the doorstep of the Daintree rainforest
- Mission Beach – a secluded location with a relaxed boutique atmosphere
- Cooktown – a unique coastal town with a rich Australian history and Lizard Island nearby
