Cairns Hosts Peak Strata Title Conference

The North Queensland insurance crisis is among the topics under discussion at the Strata Community Association Queensland annual conference at the Cairns Convention Centre today and tomorrow (March 2 – 3).

Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Mark Olsen said the conference held strong links to the Cairns economy as strata accommodation was a major player in the region’s tourism accommodation sector.

“We welcome almost 300 delegates to this strategic conference in Cairns where the Strata Community Association Queensland has the largest membership outside Southeast Queensland,” he said.

“This conference not only brings a much needed boost to our economy during the shoulder season, it gives the opportunity for our community to be involved in influencing the outcomes for strata accommodation which is a key sector of our economy.”

Strata Community Association Queensland President Chris Irons said the association had committed to hosting their annual conference in Tropical North Queensland almost a year ago during the ongoing insurance crisis.

“The insurance pool was one step for us and we will not give up the fight on this issue until we see as near to parity as possible,” he said.

Cairns-based Strata Community Association Queensland board director and Devenish Law Cairns owner Ms Shane Devenish it was important to demonstrate just how important Tropical North Queensland is to Queensland strata by bringing the conference to Cairns.

“Insurance issues have been front and centre of our advocacy program and Cairns is ground zero for these problems,“ she said.

“We were pleased to host Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch last night (March 1) to talk about the insurance reforms which still need to be made to ensure parity with the Southeast.

“There will be significant discussion around the State Government’s reforms and how they will particularly effect Cairns.

“We believe bringing the conference up here signals just how important these reforms are to all of Queensland.”
