Kuranda Scenic Railway
Exploring Far North Queensland isn’t complete without experiencing one of the world’s most unique rail journeys. Aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway, you’ll be immersed in the sights, sounds, and scents of the ancient Wet Tropics rainforest—so close you can almost touch it. This unforgettable journey winds through a tropical paradise framed by rugged mountains and cascading waterfalls. Travel from Gimuy (Cairns) via Bubundji (Freshwater) to Ngunbay (Kuranda), the village in the rainforest, passing through 15 hand-carved tunnels and over 55 bridges. Step aboard vintage timber carriage, some over 100 years old, and be transported back in time as you journey through Din Din (Barron Gorge) National Park. Rising from sea level to 327 metres, the railway offers spectacular views of deep ravines, rainforest-clad peaks, and the Coral Sea stretching to the Great Barrier Reef.
Operating since 1891, this heritage-listed railway is a marvel of engineering and a tribute to the region’s natural and cultural heritage. Highlights include the iconic Kuranda Station, renowned for its tropical gardens and historic charm, one of the most photographed railway stations in the world.
Choose from three daily travel options:
- Heritage Class – Ideal for groups up to 500. Includes a souvenir trip guide, audio commentary, a photo stop at Din Din (Barron Falls), and filtered water in each carriage.
- Heritage Plus – A Heritage Class upgrade with a gift pack featuring bottled water, locally sourced snacks, and a souvenir.
- Gold Class – A premium experience for smaller groups, with restored carriages, personalised commentary, and locally sourced refreshments served by onboard hosts.
All service levels are available for half or full-day pre and post-touring options. Private charters are also available, limited only by your imagination.
